The Fascinating Journey of Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM)

In the late 1940s, after his service in World War II, Harry Van Gelder, an osteopath and naturopath trained in England and Australia, embarked on a transformative journey that would leave an indelible mark on the world of electromedicine. Upon purchasing a small private osteopathic practice in Vancouver, BC, Van Gelder inherited an early electromedical machine and a mysterious list of frequencies. With a relentless spirit of curiosity and dedication, he taught himself to use this machine, applying the frequencies to treat various ailments.

Van Gelder’s innovative approach, combining the machine’s frequencies with osteopathic manipulation, homeopathy, and nutrition, quickly earned him a reputation as a successful healer. His practice attracted patients from all over Canada and the US, seeking relief from conditions ranging from back pain to cancer. His fame and success only grew, and in 1955, he relocated his practice to Australia. By 1972, Van Gelder returned to North America, setting up in Ojai, California, where his notoriety and patient base once again flourished.

In 1980, George Douglas, a chiropractic student, heard about Van Gelder’s extraordinary practice and spent three months learning his methods. Douglas returned with a list of frequencies, which he initially set aside. However, in 1992, he purchased a Precision Microcurrent instrument with two channels, reminiscent of Van Gelder’s original machine. This purchase marked a pivotal moment in the evolution of Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM).

The frequencies were meticulously noted on the back of a business card stored atop the machine. When set on the machine and applied to patients, these frequencies produced remarkable effects. The gloves, moistened for proper conduction, were placed on the patient’s neck, and within moments, the muscles became completely soft or “smooshy.” This transformation of tissue from a solid to a gel-like state was unprecedented. Taut bands of muscle disappeared instantly, along with the patient's pain, completing the treatment in just 30 minutes. Years of manual massage and trigger point therapy had never produced such immediate and lasting results.

Surprise and disbelief quickly turned into curiosity as the effects of the treatment proved permanent, often resolving symptoms completely with just one additional session. This breakthrough laid the foundation for FSM, a revolutionary technique that has since helped countless individuals achieve lasting relief from various ailments.

FSM has grown and evolved, thanks in part to pioneers like Dr. Carol McMakin, who met Dr. Douglas in 1991 and later became known as the godmother of FSM. Today, FSM continues to be a powerful modality in the realm of electromedicine, offering hope and healing to those seeking alternative treatments for chronic pain and other conditions.
